Tyrod Taylor’s Setback: What It Means for the Jets
Tyrod Taylor, the New York Jets’ backup quarterback, is out for the rest of the preseason. He recently had arthroscopic knee surgery, described by Coach Aaron Glenn as a “minor scope.” However, he couldn’t guarantee that Taylor would be ready for the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 7.
“I don’t think he’ll be playing in the preseason,” Glenn said after practice with the New York Giants. “But hopefully, he’ll be ready for Week 1.”
At 36 years old, Taylor is the veteran backup to starter Justin Fields. His career has seen him struggle with multiple injuries, including issues with his ribs, wrist, hamstring, and a notorious punctured lung from a pain-killing injection in 2020.
With Taylor sidelined, the Jets have a couple of inexperienced options in Adrian Martinez and undrafted rookie Brady Cook. Martinez, who spent last season on the practice squad, has never played in a regular-season game, and Cook recently hobbled off with an ankle injury—though it isn’t considered serious.
Fields spoke highly of Taylor, noting his experience. “This is Year 15 for him. He’s seen a lot and played in many games. It’s great having him in the room.”
In addition to Taylor’s situation, the Jets are also dealing with injuries to other players. Wide receiver Allen Lazard will miss about two weeks with a shoulder injury. But there’s some good news: rookie tight end Mason Taylor and left guard John Simpson returned to practice after dealing with injuries.
In similar situations, veteran quarterbacks often play a crucial role not just on the field but also in mentoring younger players. This is particularly relevant as teams prepare for the season. According to a study by the NFL Players Association, teams with more experienced backups tend to perform better when starters are injured.
As the Jets approach their opener, all eyes will be on Taylor’s recovery. Fans are hopeful he can join the team in time. After all, a well-rounded experience can make a significant difference in high-stakes games.
Stay tuned for more updates as the team prepares for the upcoming season and the impact of these injuries unfolds.
