On April 11, a team of over 25 volunteers delivered Passover meals to seniors, thanks to an initiative by Alexander Jewish Family Service (JFS). This program partners with Congregation Beth Yeshurun to prepare traditional meals, guided by the Houston Kashruth Association. It aims to reach seniors who may not have the means to celebrate Passover on their own.
JFS has a long-standing history, with its Passover Assistance program starting back in 1922. This year, the program expanded, helping over 1,000 individuals get funds for groceries to honor the holiday. Melanie Goldberg, the JFS Volunteer Manager, emphasized, "It’s important for people to have all the foods for Passover. For centuries, there have been funds to help provide traditional foods like matzah."
The delivered bags included all essentials for a Seder plate, along with entrées, sides, matzah, grape juice, and dessert. Each bag also contained greeting cards made by JFS volunteers, adding a personal touch to the deliveries.
Volunteers like Jackie Maman described the experience as meaningful. “It was especially fitting during Passover, a time of freedom and compassion,” she said. Goldberg noted that this work not only benefits those receiving the meals but also enriches the volunteers by fostering a sense of community.
In past years, JFS has proven essential in supporting families and seniors throughout the Jewish holidays. During times of celebration, their efforts help ensure no one feels alone or forgotten.
As communities continue to face challenges, initiatives like this remind us of the importance of togetherness and support. For more information on how organizations help communities during holidays, you can check out the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston.
