University of Jamestown Hockey Team Sweeps McKendree University
The University of Jamestown men’s hockey team put on an impressive show over the weekend, sweeping McKendree University with a 3-1 win on Saturday at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex. The Jimmies dominated the game, firing 60 shots compared to McKendree’s 21. They controlled the pace right from the start.
The first goal came from Jacob Thomas late in the first period during a power play, giving the Jimmies a 1-0 lead. Brad Fortin and Alek Erichuk assisted on the goal.
In the second period, Jamestown continued their strong performance. Kole Christensson scored at 13:26 with help from Carson Brown and Sully Ross. Almost immediately, Carter Johnson added another goal, making it 3-0. Both Erichuk and Griffin Bourassa assisted on that shot.
McKendree finally scored in the third period as Matias Alexandrov found the net at 11:16. Despite this, Jamestown’s defense, alongside goalie Brandon Weare, held firm.
Weare had an outstanding game, saving 20 of 21 shots and securing his sixth win of the season. McKendree’s Dylan Dallaire also put on a great performance, making 57 saves, showcasing his skill even in a loss.
Earlier in the series, the Jimmies had also won 5-2 on Friday. They overwhelmed McKendree early, scoring three goals in the first period. Carter Johnson started things off just 2:31 into the game, followed by goals from Marcus Fritel and James Hooton. McKendree did manage to score a power-play goal in the second period but couldn’t close the gap.
In total, Jamestown outshot McKendree 49-23 in that match. Weare again stood out with 21 saves to secure his team’s victory, while McKendree’s Mason Haselhorst made an impressive 44 saves.
This weekend’s series demonstrated Jamestown’s potent offense and strong defense. They are set to host NCAA Division III Concordia College from Minnesota for an exhibition game on October 24.
