Jimmy Johnson, the celebrated Hall of Fame coach known for winning two Super Bowls and a college national championship, has announced his retirement from Fox Sports after an impressive 31-year journey with its NFL coverage. The news came during his appearance on “The Herd With Colin Cowherd.”
At 81, Johnson shared that his time at Fox was the highlight of his career, even surpassing his Super Bowl wins. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with Fox Sports CEO Eric Shanks and producer Bill Richards, saying, “I’ve made an extremely difficult decision. I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years.” He reflected fondly on his time spent with colleagues, admitting he would miss them greatly.
Joining Fox NFL Sunday when it first aired, Johnson became a beloved figure in football commentary. Shanks acknowledged the bittersweet nature of his retirement, noting the impact Johnson had on fans with his unique insights, charm, and humor.
Johnson’s coaching career began in 1965 at Louisiana Tech, where he was an assistant. He became a head coach in 1979 at Oklahoma State and later led the University of Miami to a national championship in 1987. During his five-season run with the Dallas Cowboys, he clinched Super Bowl victories in 1992 and 1993 before taking a brief hiatus from Fox to coach the Miami Dolphins.
After returning to Fox in 2002, Johnson became a staple on NFL pregame shows, often sharing the screen with notable hosts like Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, and analysts such as Howie Long and Michael Strahan. Strahan expressed his admiration for Johnson, thanking him for their friendship and wishing him well in his retirement—from fishing to relaxing on the boat.
Johnson’s legacy is not only marked by his championships but also by the affection and respect he garnered from peers and fans alike. He will undoubtedly be missed on screens across the nation.
