Joan Collins is set to portray Wallis Simpson in a new biopic. Simpson was the American socialite whose romance with British King Edward VIII led him to abdicate the throne. The film, titled “The Bitter End,” is about to begin filming.
The 91-year-old Collins shared the exciting news on social media. She posted a striking black and white image of herself alongside a famous photo of Simpson. Simpson became the Duchess of Windsor when she married Edward after his abdication.
Collins expressed her delight, stating, “I’m thrilled to play Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor. This film tells the untold story of her final years. We’ll start shooting soon in London and Paris.”
Fans are buzzing with excitement. Many commented on her post, eager to see the untold story of Simpson’s life in the spotlight. One follower noted, “I’ve always been curious about those final years for her.” Another added, “No one could play the role better than you!”
Filming is expected to kick off in May, which coincides with Collins’ upcoming birthday. She will be turning 92, and this role adds to her illustrious career, which includes her iconic role as Alexis Colby in the ’80s soap opera “Dynasty.”
The story of Edward VIII is dramatic. In 1936, he caused a scandal by stepping down from the throne to marry Simpson, a divorcée. Born Bessie Wallis Warfield in Pennsylvania, Simpson met Edward after moving to London with her second husband in the 1930s. Edward became king following the death of his father, George V.
Only ten months into his reign, Edward abdicated, creating a constitutional crisis and paving the way for his brother, George VI, to ascend the throne.
Edward and Wallis married in France in 1937, becoming the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. They spent most of their lives in France, eventually moving to Villa Windsor in Paris. Edward passed away in 1972, and Wallis lived there until her death in 1986.
The film aims to unveil the shocking, lesser-known events of Simpson’s later years, according to the production company, John Gore Studios. The script is penned by Louise Fennell, mother of actress Emerald Fennell, known for her role in “The Crown.” It will be directed by Mike Newell, famous for “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”
