University of Minnesota Track Star Shines Bright
The University of Minnesota’s men’s track and field team has made waves this outdoor season. Freshman John Caleb has just been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. This is a notable milestone in his young career after impressive performances at the Beach Opener and the USF Alumni Invite.
Caleb, hailing from Ogun State, Nigeria, joined the Gophers in January. He’s quickly become a standout athlete. At the Beach Opener, he sprinted to a time of 10.22 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He then improved to 10.18 seconds at the USF Alumni Invite, where he finished second. This time ranks him third in the NCAA and first in the Big Ten for 2026. Remarkably, he’s now the third-fastest in Minnesota history for this event.
In the 200 meter event, Caleb achieved a time of 20.46 seconds at the Beach Opener and followed up with 20.75 seconds in Tampa. His times put him sixth in the Gophers’ all-time rankings and 17th in the nation for this season.
Caleb also played a key role in the 4×100 meter relay. As the lead runner, he helped the team secure a victory with a time of 38.69 seconds, which makes them the best in the NCAA and fourth in the world for 2026.
This marks a significant moment for the Gophers. Caleb is the first athlete to earn the Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor since 2025, highlighting how quickly he’s made his mark.
According to recent statistics, track and field continues to grow in popularity among college students, with increasing participation rates each year. In fact, the NCAA reported over 30,000 athletes across all divisions in 2022. This growth indicates that more young talents like Caleb are emerging, bringing fresh energy to the sport.
