John Goodman Opens Up About His Emotional Struggles with Roseanne Barr After Her Firing

John Goodman recently shared that he hasn’t spoken to Roseanne Barr in about seven or eight years. He doesn’t expect to reconnect. “I’d rather doubt if she wants to talk to me,” he said in an interview.

Goodman and Barr starred as a couple on the hit show “Roseanne,” which aired from 1988 to 1997 and briefly returned for a 10th season in 2018. The show’s revival was cut short when Barr made controversial comments on Twitter, leading ABC to cancel plans for an 11th season.

After her offensive tweets, ABC President Channing Dungey stated, “Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant, and inconsistent with our values.” Following the cancellation, the network created a spinoff called “The Connors,” explaining Barr’s absence by having her character die of a drug overdose.

Goodman admitted he didn’t think “The Connors” would last long. “I thought it’d be a one-off thing,” he mentioned, yet the show ended up running for seven seasons. Reflecting on his time with Barr, he noted that they had a fun dynamic. “She made me laugh, and I made her laugh,” he recalled, reminiscing about the show’s peak viewership, where they drew in 20 to 30 million people an episode.

Barr, on the other hand, has expressed that she is not in touch with her former co-stars. She mentioned in a June interview, “I’m not friends with none of them. They’re all in the past.” Despite saying she holds no bitterness, she criticized how things ended, adding, “They f–ked it all up with their greed and ridiculous stupidity.” She then wished them well, showing complex feelings about her past connections.

Interestingly, the social media landscape has changed significantly since the days of “Roseanne.” A recent survey revealed that nearly 70% of people believe social media can impact a celebrity’s career, highlighting the weight of public opinion in today’s digital age. As actors navigate this new terrain, the case of Goodman and Barr serves as a reminder of how quickly things can shift based on a few ill-chosen words online.

Despite their personal disconnect, Goodman has fondly remembered their work together. “It was a special time,” he said, reflecting on how things were different back then. The legacy of their show continues to resonate, even if the stars have gone their separate ways.
