John Harbaugh Questions Feasibility of Two-Way Players: Are There ‘Enough Hours in the Day’ for Full-Time Roles?

As the 2025 draft draws near, all eyes are on Travis Hunter and his ambitions. Hunter wants to play as both a receiver and a cornerback. The big question is whether the team that selects him will allow him to pursue this dual role.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh weighed in on the topic, noting the challenges. He stated in a recent press conference, “It’s gonna be interesting to see how they do it. But to say that you’re gonna be completely immersed in everything on offense and defense? I don’t know if there are enough hours in the day for a player to do that.”

Harbaugh did recognize that it might be possible for a player to focus mainly on one position while still having a few plays in a different role. If the Browns draft Hunter, Harbaugh will soon see how Cleveland manages his talents, facing them twice this season.

Harbaugh has a valid point. Performing well in one position requires extensive preparation. A player needs to know plays, strategies, and adjustments, plus study game film. Tackling two positions might be too much, but Hunter has excelled as both a top receiver and cornerback in college.

Hunter’s experience in college proves he has the skill to handle this challenge. If a team is not willing to let him explore this potential, they might not be the right fit for him.

Interestingly, Harbaugh has seen players succeed in dual roles before. In 2019, Patrick Ricard became the first player since Mike Furrey to hit over 100 snaps on both offense and defense. Ricard did it by playing planned roles, while Furrey filled in due to injuries. Hunter, however, might aim for that milestone every few games, which could give the Browns a significant advantage.

Having a player who can excel in multiple positions adds a layer of flexibility. The Browns could reduce the number of certain position players on game day, making room for other critical roles.

In the end, if the Browns draft Hunter, letting him explore his abilities might lead to remarkable outcomes, benefiting both him and the team. If he finds it overwhelming, he can always settle into one focused role. It all comes down to giving him the chance to shine.
