The San Francisco 49ers had an interesting day during the draft. They started with the 27th pick, hoping to find an edge rusher to team up with Nick Bosa. However, key prospects like Akheem Mesidor from the University of Miami and Malachi Lawrence from UCF were picked just before them, heading to the Chargers and Cowboys at 22 and 23, respectively.
Instead of sticking with the 27th pick, the 49ers chose to trade back to 30th. This move came with the bonus of a third-round pick from the Dolphins, swapping their 27th and a fourth-round pick (138) for the 30th spot. Even with several intriguing players still available, the 49ers decided to adjust their strategy and move out of the first round entirely.
They now have the first pick in the second round from a previous trade with the Jets, which also netted them a fifth-round pick at 179.
John Lynch, the 49ers’ General Manager, shared insights on their decision-making process. “The way the board fell played a big role. We had a few players we liked, but they weren’t there when it was our turn. We’ve been proactive in exploring options to move back.” He acknowledged that many teams were looking to trade down, which opened up new possibilities for them.
Now, with seven picks in total, including three in the top 100, the 49ers have a clear direction. “We have a strong idea of who we might pick if we stay at 33,” Lynch mentioned. He emphasized that they are always open to potential trades but are also excited about their current plan.
