John Malkovich Explains His Marvel Rejections: ‘If You Won’t Pay Me, I’m Not Interested’ – Insights Ahead of ‘Fantastic Four’

John Malkovich is set to star in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer. In a recent interview, he shared why he hasn’t joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until now.

According to Malkovich, it all came down to pay. He explained, “The reason I didn’t do them had nothing to do with any artistic considerations whatsoever. I didn’t like the deals they made, at all.”

He elaborated on the challenges of filming. “These films are quite grueling to make. If you’re going to hang from a crane in front of a green screen for six months, pay me. If you don’t want to pay me, that’s fine, but then I’m not interested. I’d rather be onstage, directing a play, or doing something else.”

Eventually, The Fantastic Four: First Steps made him an offer he liked. Malkovich compared the experience to theater, saying, “You imagine a bunch of stuff that isn’t there and do your little play.”

The film, directed by Matt Shakman, also features Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and others. It’s set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025.

Besides Marvel, Malkovich will star in Martin McDonagh’s upcoming film Wild Horse Nine alongside Mark Ruffalo and Sam Rockwell. He recently impressed audiences at Sundance with A24’s comedy Opus, and he’s known for his roles in Places in the Heart and In the Line of Fire. His self-satirical performance in Being John Malkovich remains memorable.
