Pop legend Johnny Mathis is set to retire from live performances. At 89, he announced that he will step away from the stage due to age and memory challenges. His team shared this news on his official Facebook page. While he will wrap up his Voice of Romance Tour this spring, all concerts after June 2025 are canceled.
The statement noted, "As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year." It highlighted concerns about his memory and overall health. His last concert is scheduled for May 18 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey. Refunds for canceled performances will be available at the original point of purchase.
Mathis’ representative, Robert Scott, mentioned that while his memory issues are manageable in daily life, travel for performances has been physically taxing. He emphasized, “His voice is still wonderful, and it’s a shame that he won’t be able to share that with his audiences after May 18.” After 69 years of performing, Mathis feels it’s time to say goodbye.
Born John Royce Mathis in September 1935, he grew up in a musical family. His father taught him his first song, sparking a lifelong passion for music. Mathis’ career took off in college when he was discovered by a talent manager. He signed with Columbia Records in 1955, launching a career that would span decades.
Over the years, Mathis released more than 70 albums, including classics like "Wonderful, Wonderful!" and "Chances Are." His contributions to music earned him a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 and multiple songs inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
In recent interviews, Mathis reflected on his career and expressed gratitude for his supporters. He once said, "I don’t think about retiring. I think about how I can keep singing for the rest of my life." Yet, acknowledging his current struggles, he understands that it’s time to move on.

As he prepares for his final performance, fans worldwide are expressing love and admiration for the man whose music has touched their hearts for generations.
