Over the weekend, about 15,000 people flocked to Ladson Exchange Park for the annual Black Food Truck Festival, a lively event that showcases the rich flavors and sounds of the African American community. The festivities kicked off with the “Rhythms & Booze” Opening Soiree at the International African American Museum, setting the tone for an exciting weekend filled with great food and entertainment.

Festival founder Marcus Hammond shared that the park was home to 45-50 vendors, offering a diverse range of options from seafood to mouth-watering desserts and local apparel. Since its inception three and a half years ago, the festival has worked to revive the connections between food, music, and culture, especially after the challenges of the pandemic.

“The entertainment is top notch,” Hammond said. He emphasized the variety of activities available, from live music featuring some of the best regional bands to a Kids’ Zone, ensuring there’s something enjoyable for everyone. This multi-generational approach aims to foster a sense of community and keep families coming back year after year.

In addition to daytime activities, the festival offered after-parties like "Trappyoke" and "AfroChuck," allowing attendees to continue the celebration into the night. Hammond believes it’s crucial to honor Charleston’s rich heritage, known for its hospitality and culinary excellence, particularly highlighting African American contributions.
