State Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr. recently joined forces with PS 60 in Woodhaven to collect food and essential items for the Sacred Heart food pantry in Glendale. This drive ran throughout May, allowing community members to drop off non-perishable foods and personal care items at designated locations.
On June 5, a heartfelt donation ceremony took place. Staff at the pantry expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support. “The donations will significantly help families facing hardships,” Addabbo shared. He highlighted the inspiring unity of the community during this initiative.
The Sacred Heart pantry, located at 83-17 78th Ave., provides assistance to hundreds each month. Demand has grown, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with rising costs in groceries and everyday goods. For many families, these resources are a lifeline.
In terms of collected items, donations included canned veggies, pasta, rice, toiletries, and more. Notably, Martin Colberg, president of the Woodhaven Residents Block Association, contributed a substantial quantity of matzah. This kind of support demonstrates the community’s spirit and commitment to helping those in need.
PS 60 played a significant role by encouraging students and families to participate. This effort was not just about collecting supplies; it also taught valuable lessons in civic duty and community engagement. Schools like PS 60 are vital in fostering a sense of responsibility among the younger generation.
Furthermore, a recent survey shows that food insecurity has remained a pressing issue as inflation continues to affect many households. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 10.5% of American households experienced food insecurity in the past year, highlighting the importance of local initiatives like this one.
In a world where challenges are many, the collective efforts of individuals and organizations can make a real difference. Such community actions reflect a growing trend, where local partnerships aim to address pressing social issues effectively.
