SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Barton Health’s Emergency and Trauma teams are hosting the Winter Injury Trauma Symposium. This event is aimed at local medical professionals and will focus on improving patient care for injuries related to winter activities.
Mark your calendars for Friday, April 18, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The seminar will take place at Barton’s Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, located at 2170B South Avenue. Participants will be able to earn continuing medical education credits, and there will also be a virtual attendance option available.
This conference is designed for Ski Patrol, EMS staff, nurses, and doctors. It will provide practical, evidence-based approaches for managing injuries that occur during winter sports, from the slopes to the emergency room at Barton Health.
Dr. Daniel Shocket, the EMS Director and Emergency Department Physician at Barton Health, will be the keynote speaker. He will discuss best practices for teamwork among care providers. Dr. Kimberly Evans, Medical Director of Trauma at Barton Health, emphasizes the importance of collaboration: “Our aim is to unify the entire trauma care team—Ski Patrol, EMS, nurses, and physicians—on how we handle winter sports injuries. Effective communication is crucial for the recovery of our community and visitors,” she noted.
This symposium reflects a growing trend in the medical community towards multidisciplinary teamwork in emergency care. According to a recent survey by the American College of Emergency Physicians, 79% of emergency physicians believe that improved collaboration among specialists leads to better outcomes for patients. This event is an important step in fostering such collaboration in the Tahoe region.
Winter sports injuries, such as fractures and sprains, are common but can be effectively managed with the right training and teamwork. By attending this symposium, participants will gain valuable skills that can improve patient care in real-life situations.
