Chaddock is hosting a Youth Mental Health First Aid training in Carthage, Illinois. This session aims to help participants support young people facing mental health challenges.

Two Chaddock trainers will lead the session. Kirsty Nolan, the lead trainer, emphasizes that this training is not a substitute for professional help. Instead, it serves as a way to provide initial support and guide young people toward the professional care they may need.

Nolan explains, “It’s about showing young people that someone sees them and can help them.” The training is skills-based and focuses on recognizing and responding to mental health crises among youth.

This training is valuable for everyone, not just parents or caregivers. Nolan suggests that even if you don’t work with children directly, you might encounter youth in your daily life who are struggling. “Mental health first aid is really designed for anyone,” she says.

She also highlights how the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to a rise in mental health issues among young people. The isolation many faced during this time has had lasting effects on their well-being.

The training will take place on February 6 at the Carthage United Methodist Church, located at 402 Main St. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration costs $30 per person, and you can sign up here.
