On Sunday, November 2, Cub Scouts Pack 270 will hold a community tabling event at Stop & Shop, teaming up with Real Food CT. This effort aims to support two food pantries in Newtown and make healthy produce accessible to residents in need.
The Scouts will be outside the supermarket at Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street, from 9 AM until 2 PM. They want to raise awareness about the importance of healthy food access while collecting donations of shelf-stable produce, like onions, apples, and potatoes. They’ll also gather specific canned goods based on requests from local pantry directors. All items collected will be distributed by Real Food CT to the food pantries.
This initiative not only helps those in need but also fosters collaboration between local youth and community organizations. Sean Fitzpatrick, executive director of Real Food CT, expressed gratitude for such events. “It’s amazing to have community members step up to support our food banks,” he shared.
Real Food CT is dedicated to increasing access to fresh food. This year, they plan to distribute over 125,000 pounds of locally grown produce to 30 food pantry partners in the area. The event with Pack 270 emphasizes the importance of helping neighbors in need with nutritious food.
For the Scouts, this project serves as a valuable learning experience. They’ll explore the five food groups, understand how nonprofits operate, and learn about civic engagement and community service.
Cub Scouts Pack 270 committee member Ashli Newman highlighted the Scouts’ mission. “As Cub Scouts, we believe in helping others. By collecting donations, we’re making a real impact in our community while earning our adventure loops.”
User reactions on social media reflect a strong community spirit and support for local initiatives. People are praising the Scouts for their commitment and creativity in tackling hunger and promoting healthy living.
