Hyderabad recently hosted a fascinating lecture titled “The Unfinished Constitution: Liberty, Equality, Fraternity in Contemporary India,” in honor of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Jayanti. Professor Srikrishna Deva Rao, the Vice-Chancellor of NALSAR University of Law, led the talk, with Professor N. Nagaraju, Vice-Chancellor of EFLU, chairing the session.
Prof. Rao emphasized how our Constitution serves as an aspiration for all Indians. He pointed out that understanding and applying these principles are ongoing efforts. He particularly focused on the concepts of liberty, equality, and fraternity. While he acknowledged that fraternity is crucial for societal unity, he noted it’s often underappreciated.
Prof. Rao described fraternity as “social endosmosis”—a concept that highlights our shared responsibilities toward one another. He warned that without a just social structure, our political democracy could falter. He urged that the three branches of government—the legislature, executive, and judiciary—need to collaborate effectively. The legislature should craft meaningful laws, the executive must implement them, and the judiciary should interpret rights deeply.
It’s essential to realize that India’s future hinges on our collective grasp of these key principles. In conclusion, he stressed that creating a fair society is a duty shared by both the Constitution and its citizens.
In today’s world, this message resonates even more. Current studies reveal that about 70% of Indians believe in the necessity of equality and social justice, showcasing a desire for meaningful change. Engaging in discussions like this can help bridge the gap between ideals and reality.
The lecture saw vibrant participation from various community members, including the Registrar, Sini Manchala, faculty, and students. This highlights a growing interest in addressing critical societal issues.
