Join Global Experts at Dhaka’s International Workshop: Master Climate Adaptation Strategies!

A two-day workshop kicked off in Dhaka, focusing on using earth remote sensing technologies to tackle climate change and disaster management in South Asia. It’s called "Enhancing Climate Adaptation and Resilience Through Earth Observation in the South Asian Region" and takes place at BRAC University.

The event is organized by multiple institutions, including the Department of Geography and Environment at Jagannath University and BRAC University’s Center for Climate Change. Support comes from various organizations like the Asia-Oceania Group on Earth Observations.

Experts from Bangladesh, China, the UK, and Nepal are participating, discussing how vital earth observation is for assessing climate risks and managing natural disasters. This is especially important in a region vulnerable to climate threats.

At the opening session, Ainun Nishat, a professor emeritus at BRAC University, highlighted the importance of integrating technology in climate adaptation. Jagannath University’s vice-chancellor Md Rezaul Karim emphasized that universities are evolving into hubs for climate solutions.

A noteworthy perspective came from Professor Jianjun Wu of Beijing Normal University, who stated that collaborative research is essential for effective disaster management across South Asia. Meanwhile, Ashish Damle from Oxfam noted that aligning technology with inclusive policies is crucial for achieving climate justice.

Research shows that 60% of South Asian countries experience significant climate-related challenges, making the need for effective disaster management strategies urgent. By focusing on technology and education, this workshop aims to build the necessary skills for future leaders in climate adaptation.

The workshop also seeks to empower young researchers with practical knowledge of geospatial technologies, preparing them to address the pressing environmental issues in the region.

In conclusion, integrating earth observation and remote sensing into education and policy is essential for tackling climate change effectively. The involvement of various stakeholders, from universities to international organizations, creates a collaborative effort to enhance climate resilience in South Asia.
