Support for West Virginia Food Banks Amid SNAP Cuts
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — In November, many West Virginians will find themselves without Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. To address this challenge, Governor Patrick Morrisey announced plans to allocate state funds to local food banks and urged residents to contribute what they can.
The state has identified up to $13 million in civil contingency funds for emergency assistance. Initially, $5 million will be directed to food banks, with the rest reserved to match donations from the community. “This is the best way to quickly get resources to those in need,” Morrisey said. He emphasized the importance of community support in maximizing the impact of these funds.
Among the key organizations benefiting from this initiative are the Mountaineer Food Bank and Facing Hunger Food Bank. While the state plans to release the full $13 million regardless of donation levels, Morrisey hopes that individuals will help stretch the state’s contributions by donating directly.
Recent research from the USDA shows that food insecurity disproportionately affects households with children and those living in rural areas, emphasizing the importance of these food banks during tough times. A 2022 report found that over 12% of West Virginians faced food insecurity, demonstrating the ongoing need for support.
Historically, West Virginia has encountered similar situations. During the pandemic, food banks experienced a surge in demand, which prompted swift community responses. Lessons from that time continue to inform current strategies, focusing on collaboration between state funds and local efforts.
As food insecurity remains a pressing issue, community contributions can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing hardship. Supporting local food banks not only provides immediate relief but also strengthens community ties during challenging times.
