Nasarawa State’s governor, Engr Abdullahi Sule, has kicked off an initiative to plant trees aimed at fighting climate change. This event took place in the Karu local government area.
Sule emphasized that this project supports President Bola Tinubu’s goals for environmental protection and community growth. He stated, “The campaign aims to beautify our state, tackle erosion, and create a healthier environment for everyone.”
In addition to the tree-planting efforts, the governor noted that his administration is focusing on cleanliness across the state. Waste bins have been distributed to all 13 local government areas. He explained that effectively managing waste can benefit agriculture and even generate power, which could boost the local economy.
During the event, Sule also addressed the traffic issues in Karu. The government has reached out to the federal government for help in building alternative routes and a flyover to ease congestion in areas like Mararraba, Gitata, and Gurku.
Margaret Elayo, the Environment and Natural Resources commissioner, urged residents to support the government’s environmental efforts. She warned that improper waste management could lead to severe consequences, such as climate change and desertification.
In a related note, Abubakar Madaki, the chairman of the Karu local government area, expressed concerns about road blockages in Old Karu and Rugan Madaki, which are exacerbating traffic jams.
