PARKERSBURG – Even with rain pouring down, folks in Parkersburg laced up their shoes for National Walk at Lunch Day. This event, aimed at promoting healthier work habits, encouraged participants to get moving.
Hosted by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia, the walk kicked off in downtown Parkersburg. Participants followed a route that took them through the bustling streets to Bicentennial Park, looping back to the starting point.
This initiative wasn’t just local. Highmark locations across the region joined in, spreading a united message: make your lunch break active. Instead of sitting at a desk, they suggested turning a “working lunch” into a “walking lunch.” This small shift can lead to big health benefits.
After the walk, Highmark West Virginia President Jay Sheehy expressed gratitude to everyone who came out. “This is a wonderful event to improve both our physical and mental well-being,” he said. “It’s nice getting out and getting some fresh air, even with a little rain.”
Sheehy highlighted the importance of regular physical activity. Research shows that even small amounts of exercise can boost heart health and overall wellness. He personally shared his success with walking, noting improvements in his cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and weight.
This year’s event shows Highmark’s commitment to promoting health. According to the American Heart Association, regular walking can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Just thirty minutes a day can make a real difference.
As more companies push for healthier workplace habits, it’s important to remember that even simple changes can lead to major improvements! Walking is one of the easiest and most accessible forms of exercise. Whether it’s a stroll during lunch or a few laps around the office, every step counts.
