Join Houghton County Businesses in a Weekend Challenge: Help Us Fill 100 Food Bags for Those in Need!

Two businesses in Houghton County, Breakwater Federal Credit Union and Keweenaw Co-op, are teaming up for a special food drive this weekend. Their goal is to fill 100 bags with non-perishable food items. All collected food will go to the Western U.P. Food Bank.

Ariele Pizzo, the Marketing & Outreach Coordinator for Keweenaw Co-op, emphasizes the importance of community care. “This is a great chance for us to come together and support those in need,” she says. The focus is on collecting as much food as possible.

If you can’t make it to the event on Saturday, don’t worry! You can drop off your donations at Breakwater Federal Credit Union beforehand.

This food drive isn’t the co-op’s only effort to help the community. Earlier this month, they started matching every donation made through their Round UP program at checkout. So far, more than 955 customers have participated, raising over $1,200 in just a week. “That’s impressive,” Pizzo adds, noting that usually they raise about $3,000 to $4,000 every three months.

The food drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the co-op café area. Community involvement can make a significant difference, especially in times of need.

In a recent survey, 39% of Americans reported food insecurity, highlighting the relevance of initiatives like this. Community-driven efforts, such as this food drive, not only provide immediate assistance but also foster a sense of solidarity and belonging. It’s a reminder that local actions can have a big impact, making sure no one goes hungry in our communities.
