On Saturday night, cities across India participated in Earth Hour. From 8:30 to 9:30 PM, many iconic sites, including India Gate in Delhi and Qutub Minar, turned off their lights to save energy. In Hyderabad, the Dr. BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat joined in the effort as well, turning off its lights.
Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It started in Sydney, Australia, back in 2007 and has since grown to include millions of people from over 190 countries. Last year, participants in Delhi saved an impressive 206 MW of electricity during Earth Hour. BSES, the electricity distribution company, has encouraged over 50 lakh consumers in Delhi to participate by switching off non-essential lights. This year, they aimed to surpass that figure and show Delhi’s commitment in the fight against climate change.
Experts in environmental studies stress that initiatives like Earth Hour inspire meaningful change. According to a recent survey by WWF, 70% of people in India believe that individual actions can significantly impact environmental protection. This strong belief motivates communities to come together, proving that even small actions can lead to big changes.
