A Heartfelt Mission: Jimmy Olson’s 17th Annual Toy Drive
For nearly three decades, “Jammin’ Jimmy” Olson has dedicated himself to bringing joy during the holidays. This year marks his 17th toy drive in Tyler, part of a nationwide effort stretching from San Diego to Rochester.
Olson’s event at Walmart, known as the “Tons of Toys” drive, is a vital resource for families in need. This year, he collected a full POD of toys along with seven pallets of food and supplies. These donations will go to People Attempting to Help (PATH) and Toys for Tots, helping those who are struggling.
Olson has noticed an increase in need. “Prices are soaring, and people are feeling the pinch,” he said. Recent reports show that nearly 60% of families are worried about affording basic necessities due to rising costs. “Yet, the generosity of the people in Tyler continues to amaze me.”
He founded JJO Charities in 1999 and has seen the call for help grow each year. Recently, he held a drive in Bakersfield, California, where local food banks faced urgent shortages. While programs like SNAP provide some relief, Olson emphasizes that community involvement plays a huge role. “We need everyday heroes who can make a difference,” he added.
Olson believes in the unexpected kindness of strangers. He urges people not to judge others based on appearances. “You never know who might surprise you with their generosity.”
Volunteers are crucial to the drive’s success. Olson credits local supporters, including young Marines and community members. “Without them, we couldn’t do this,” he said.
His mission is clear: no child should go to bed hungry, and every child should have a reason to smile on Christmas morning. “We’re simply trying to ensure every child has what they need,” Olson reiterated.
