Join JTF’s Mission: Planting Trees to Combat Climate Change in Plateau

The Joint Task Force, Operation Ensuring Peace (JTF-OPEP), organized a tree planting event in Plateau on Saturday. This effort aims to combat climate change and address local deforestation issues.

Maj.-Gen. Folunsho Oyinlola, the operation’s commander, emphasized that this initiative comes from Sector One. He highlighted the importance of this action as part of their broader strategy to improve security in the region.

Oyinlola mentioned that deforestation has increasingly become a problem. “We hope this activity will help us connect with the community while promoting better health and quality of life,” he said. He believes these steps will support local communities in facing deforestation, which is often driven by illegal tree cutting for firewood.

“While we work on keeping citizens safe, we must also foster a clean and sustainable environment,” Oyinlola continued. Tree planting, he noted, is an effective way to mitigate climate change effects and protect the ecosystem.

Navy Capt. Mahmud Fana, commander of JTF-OPEP’s Sector One, added that this initiative seeks to create a safer environment for Plateau residents. He pointed out that rising charcoal demand leads to more tree loss, which is concerning. The tree planting is part of a larger civil-military effort to engage the community positively.

Recent studies show that deforestation worldwide is accelerating at an alarming rate. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, about 10 million hectares of forest are lost each year. Initiatives like tree planting can significantly counteract this trend, improving the environment and community resilience. It’s essential for citizens to join in these efforts regularly.

This tree-planting exercise represents more than just environmental care; it’s about building trust and cooperation between the military and the community.
