Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, is set to launch an exciting mission with an all-women crew. This historic flight, known as NS-31, will take place in spring 2025 and includes a diverse group of notable women. Among them are singer Katy Perry, “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King, and Lauren Sánchez, Bezos’ fiancée.
The crew also features Aisha Bowe, an aerospace engineer from the Bahamas, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn. Flynn has worked on important projects like “This Changes Everything,” which explores women’s roles in Hollywood, and “Lilly,” a tribute to fair-pay champion Lilly Ledbetter.
Sánchez played a key role in bringing this mission together. She expressed her honor in leading such a talented group of explorers. Their journey aims not only to challenge their views of Earth but also to enable them to share their stories and inspire future generations.
Gayle King shared her mixed feelings about flying to space, comparing it to the emotional rollercoaster of childbirth. At 70, she consulted with her children and her friend Oprah Winfrey before deciding to join the mission.
This flight will be significant as it marks the 11th human trip for Blue Origin’s New Shepard program and the 31st overall for the company. Importantly, it will be the first all-female crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s historic solo flight in 1963. So far, the New Shepard program has carried 52 people past the Kármán line, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.
Blue Origin has made headlines before. In 2021, William Shatner became the oldest person to travel into space at 90 years old on a Blue Origin flight. His experience was so profound that he described it as one of the most powerful feelings he had ever felt. Earlier that year, Bezos himself took a brief flight into space, which lasted approximately 10 minutes.
As these remarkable women prepare for their groundbreaking journey, the world watches with anticipation. This mission not only highlights female achievements in space but also paves the way for future explorations.
