The Lagos State Government is set to tackle environmental challenges while creating economic opportunities. This comes as excitement builds for the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation.”
At a recent press briefing at the Eko Atlantic Corporate Office, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, emphasized that Africa is ready to lead in climate action, saying, “Africa is not waiting to be rescued; we are ready to lead.” This strong statement reflects a growing momentum across the continent toward self-sufficiency and proactive approaches to climate change.
Wahab pointed out Lagos’ significant investments in various areas like coastal defenses, flood mitigation, renewable energy, and urban greening. These initiatives are not just about adaptation—they set Lagos up as a potential model for climate resilience throughout Africa.
The upcoming summit will gather local governments, global institutions, investors, scientists, and innovators. Their goal is to create effective solutions for the pressing environmental challenges facing Africa’s coasts. Recent studies have shown that proactive coastal management can increase resilience and even boost local economies, highlighting the importance of such a collaborative effort.
During the briefing, Wahab was supported by his Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, along with permanent secretaries and heads of agencies. They all share a unified vision: “Together, we are shaping a Lagos that not only adapts to change but leads it.”
