Join Local Churches and Organizations for Inspiring Lenten Food Fundraisers: Make a Difference This Season!

As Lent begins, local churches and organizations are gearing up for some tasty food fundraisers. Here’s a look at what’s happening around the area.

Jessup VFW Post 5544, located at 205 Dolph St. in Jessup, is hosting a Lenten food and clam chowder sale on March 7 and March 28. The sale runs from noon to 5 p.m. or until everything is sold out. You can grab red clam chowder for $10 a quart or $5 a pint. If you prefer white clam chowder, it’s $13 a quart or $6.50 a pint. They also have crab bisque for $14 a quart and halushki for $9 a quart. Tuna hoagies are available for $6.75, and you can get pierogies for $13 a dozen or $3.25 for three. Don’t forget about potato pancakes at $2.25 each or $6.75 for three. Preorders can be placed by calling 570-489-7070 by Wednesday at 5 p.m., and walk-ins are welcome!

Christ Episcopal Church at 700 Delaware St., Forest City, is holding its annual Lenten sale featuring pizza, soup, Welsh cookies, and cabbage noodles to support community programs. This event runs every Friday from 3 to 5:30 p.m., starting March 7 until April 18. You can take home a 12-slice red pizza for $14 or a pagash (potato, cheese) pizza for $16. They’ll also have homemade soups for $5, cabbage and noodles for $6, and Welsh cookies for $7 a dozen. Be sure to call ahead for pizza orders at 570-785-3425.

Over in Olyphant, SS. Cyril & Methodius Church is hosting Lou’s Concessions Food Truck on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 207 River St. You can enjoy a variety of foods, including potato pancakes, halushki, pierogi, fries, and even deep-fried Oreos. There’s something for everyone!

Trinity Episcopal Church, located at 58 River St. in Carbondale, is starting its homemade Lenten lunch sale on March 7. This will be available every Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The menu features potato pancakes for $5 for three, Manhattan clam chowder for $9 large or $5 small, cabbage and noodles for $4, potato lasagna for $5, and pizza for just $2. All Saints Orthodox Church at 211 Willow Ave., Olyphant, will hold a food sale on March 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. You’ll need to place a preorder, featuring butter and onion pierogies, cabbage and noodles, Manhattan clam chowder, and even frozen pierogies. There will also be a limited bake sale. To order, call Ann at 570-383-0785 or 570-561-8082 by March 7, and you can reach the church at 570-489-5591 during the sale week.

The William Walker Hose Company, located at 803 Penn Ave., Mayfield, will host a potato pancake sale on March 21 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. or until sold out. This event is takeout only, and each pancake costs $2.

Lastly, St. Mary’s Orthodox Greek Catholic Church at 522 Main St., Dickson City, is having a takeout-only Lenten sale on April 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can enjoy potato pancakes for $2 each and Manhattan clam chowder for $8 a quart. It’s best to place your orders by April 7 at 570-309-5990.
