The Hawaiʻi Police Department recently celebrated the success of two holiday giving events in Kona, showing the community spirit and generosity of many local organizations.
First, the department held its inaugural Holiday Toy Drive on December 20 at Walmart in Kona. Over 1,000 toys were generously donated, ensuring that many children in West Hawaiʻi received gifts this Christmas. These toys were distributed through the Salvation Army and the Boys & Girls Club, spreading joy to 1,000 kids.
The police department expressed gratitude to the many partners in this initiative, including Walmart, the Food Basket, and volunteers from various organizations. Their combined efforts and generosity helped make the event a success.
Another noteworthy event was the Fill a Cruiser Food Drive, held on December 12 at Costco. This initiative raised over $8,200 and collected more than 2,300 pounds of nonperishable food, which will go to families in need on Hawaiʻi Island. The response from the community was overwhelming, reflecting the collective strength and support among residents.
Sergeant Wyattlane Nahale highlighted how essential these partnerships are in addressing food insecurity. He emphasized that the positive outcomes showcase how much can be achieved when people come together for a common cause.
Community support played a crucial role, with local businesses and volunteers contributing significantly. Organizations like Kona Costco and KAPA Radio, along with many dedicated individuals, helped surpass both fundraising and food collection goals.
These events not only brought holiday cheer but also highlighted the importance of collaboration and community spirit in making a difference for those in need.
