MGM Springfield recently made a meaningful contribution to the community by volunteering at the Food Bank of Western Mass in Chicopee. This initiative addresses the growing issue of food insecurity in the area.

A recent report from Mass General Brigham and the Greater Boston Food Bank highlights a serious problem: Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire Counties rank among the top five in Massachusetts for food insecurity. Alarmingly, nearly 52% of residents in Hampden County struggle with access to adequate food.

Jennifer McGrath, the director of philanthropy and community engagement at MGM Springfield, shared insights about their day at the Food Bank. “We have a big task at hand. Our team is sorting, boxing, weighing, and doing everything we can to ensure that fresh food quickly reaches the community,” she explained. This hands-on approach helps the Food Bank support over 180 nonprofits and organizations in the region.

MGM Springfield’s commitment goes beyond just this event. They maintain an ongoing partnership with the Food Bank, volunteering throughout the year.

The rising food insecurity rates reflect a larger nationwide trend. A report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that in 2022, approximately 10.2% of American households experienced food insecurity. Helping organizations like the Food Bank can make a significant impact in alleviating these challenges.
