During her address at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) conference in Barbados, Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy made a heartfelt plea for global solidarity in tackling climate change. Bhubaneswar is now India’s fourth cleanest city, and efforts to protect Chilika Lake and Similipal have gained international recognition. “Commonwealth nations can learn from this and work together towards similar goals,” she suggested, encouraging collaboration among states.

Switching gears, Padhy addressed the importance of maintaining a balance between national and regional governance. She spoke about India’s vast population and the need for decentralized power, which is a fundamental aspect of its democracy. “Coordination between the center and states is key,” she explained. “It allows for peaceful coexistence and respects diverse interests.”
