BASTROP, La. – The Helping Hands ministry at Mt. Zion Church of God recently held a health drive alongside its monthly food pantry, offering valuable medical services to the community.

Participants received free blood pressure and glucose screenings. Helen Smith, the ministry’s Director, emphasized the importance of these health checks. “When people learn to prepare their food wisely, they can also monitor their health. We aim to provide good food and health resources to create a healthier community,” she explained.

Recent cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits make these health drives essential. “Many seniors and younger individuals are struggling with these changes. Our program is a way for them to access nutritious food and health support,” Smith added.

Joy Sparkley, a senior who has frequented the food pantry for years, shared her thoughts on the impact of the drive. “It matters more now than it did a decade ago,” she reflected, highlighting how community resources are crucial during tough times.

In a recent survey, nearly 70% of seniors reported feeling stressed about healthcare costs. Such initiatives can help relieve some of that pressure by providing essential services at no cost.
