Pope Francis is currently in the hospital receiving treatment for double pneumonia. This marks the second Sunday he has been unable to deliver the Angelus prayer in person.
In a recent message, the 88-year-old Pope expressed that he is “confidently continuing” his treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. He thanked the doctors and health workers for their care and mentioned the many well-wishes he has received, especially touching letters and drawings from children.
The Vatican updated the public on Saturday regarding his health, stating that the Pope’s condition remains “critical.” It’s important to note that after being admitted on February 14 due to breathing issues, he has faced several health challenges over the years. As a young man, he had pleurisy and underwent surgery to remove part of one lung, making him susceptible to lung infections.
Throughout his tenure as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis has made multiple hospital visits. In March 2023, he was hospitalized for bronchitis.
The Vatican has committed to sharing details about his health regularly. Recently, they reported that he was alert and spent part of his day in an armchair, though he is still not out of danger. He has required blood transfusions and a high flow of oxygen, highlighting the complexity of his condition. As one doctor noted, “He is the Pope, but he is also a man.”
In his recent message, the Pope also took a moment to acknowledge the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine, urging everyone to pray for peace in conflict zones around the world, including the Middle East and Sudan.
Normally, the Pope delivers the Angelus from the window of the Apostolic Palace, sharing a brief message with the faithful gathered below. His absence during these moments is deeply felt by many.
