Purdue University Northwest to Host Free MLK Day Events in 2026

Purdue University Northwest (PNW) is gearing up to honor Martin Luther King Jr. with two free community celebrations in January 2026.

Celebration Details

  • January 15, 2026:

    • Location: Alumni Hall, Student Union and Library Building, Hammond.
    • Time: 12:30 PM – 2 PM.
    • Keynote Speaker: Shontrai Irving, a PNW alumnus and clinical professor of Business Law, will lead the event. He’s known for his work in law and community engagement, especially through his “Leaders in Law, Leaders in Literacy” initiative.
  • January 19, 2026:

    • Location: Great Hall Events and Conference Center, Westville.
    • Time: 7:45 AM – 9:30 AM.
    • Highlights: The event will feature performances by local school choirs and speeches from PNW’s Chancellor Kenneth C. Holford and Michigan City Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch. The keynote will be delivered by Kiahna W. Davis, an accomplished CEO in accounting and a recognized community leader.

Community Impact

Both celebrations aim to promote dialogue and foster community engagement, reflecting MLK’s legacy. According to recent surveys, community events like these significantly enhance civic participation, with 70% of attendees feeling more connected to their neighborhoods post-event.

Davis has a strong history of community involvement, having raised over $500,000 for local organizations through the African American Legacy Fund of Indianapolis. This aligns with a broader trend where events honoring civil rights leaders encourage community action and fundraising.

Why It Matters

These events not only honor a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement but also emphasize the importance of active citizenship. They serve as a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice.

If you’re interested in attending, more details and registration can be found on the official PNW website.
