The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders recently organized an emergency food drive at PNC Field to support the Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank. This initiative aimed to collect non-perishable food items like canned vegetables, fruit, pasta, rice, and canned proteins.
With colder months approaching, community relations manager Krista Lutzick expressed concerns about rising food insecurity. She noted, “The uncertainty around SNAP benefits is a major issue. With the holidays nearing, many families will need extra support.”
All items collected will be distributed to local food pantries, helping those in need across the region. To encourage participation, the RailRiders offered a ticket voucher for a future game to anyone who donated a bag of food.
Historically, food drives tend to see an uptick around the holiday season. A recent survey by Feeding America revealed that food insecurity has increased by 10% since last year, highlighting the ongoing challenges many face.
If you missed the drive, you can still help by reaching out to Krista Lutzick at 570-558-4616 to arrange a drop-off. This initiative underscores the importance of community support in difficult times.
