The city of Sonoma is teaming up with the Redwood Empire Food Bank for a “Food and Funds Drive” this week. This event aims to help children, families, and seniors facing food insecurity, especially due to delays in federal food aid.
Join us at Sonoma City Hall from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, November 14. You can drop off nonperishable food items or make financial contributions. This drive-thru setup allows for easy donation from your vehicle or a hand delivery if you prefer.
With ongoing delays in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), many residents are struggling. City Manager David Guhin noted that working with the food bank has been crucial, especially during uncertain times. While some benefits have resumed, thousands are still without them. In Sonoma County, over 43,000 people and nearly 10,700 in Napa County depend on CalFresh for their meals.
In October alone, the Redwood Empire Food Bank assisted more than 1,500 new families, highlighting the increasing demand for support. The food bank is accepting all nonperishable items, but the most needed are canned tuna, chicken, peanut butter, rice, pasta, oats, dry beans, and low-sugar cereal.
Interestingly, every dollar donated allows the food bank to provide $3 worth of food. That’s a significant impact!
