“Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” is the latest entry in Rian Johnson’s popular franchise, and it’s already generating buzz with its mix of intrigue and humor. While it has a limited theatrical run before its Netflix release on December 12, let’s take a closer look.
This film centers around Jud Duplenticy, played by Josh O’Connor, who is an assistant pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude Church. He’s in this role as a form of punishment, having clashed with a deacon at his previous church. Conflict brews with Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, portrayed by Josh Brolin, who exerts a heavy-handed approach toward his congregation and struggles with a host of personal vices.
When Wicks is discovered dead during a Good Friday service, all eyes turn to Duplenticy, making him the prime suspect. The local police chief, played by Mila Kunis, realizes they need help and call in the renowned detective Benoit Blanc, played by Daniel Craig. Blanc’s intuition leads him to believe that Duplenticy is more noble than the evidence suggests.
As the story unfolds, viewers are taken on a journey through layers of secrets involving a missing family fortune and unexpected relationships. Blanc’s charming Southern demeanor adds a delightful contrast to the somber themes of faith and redemption explored in the film.
While fans of the “Knives Out” series might anticipate a series of clever twists, this installment takes its time, allowing deeper conversations around morality and honesty. Despite some slower moments, the film still delivers its share of clever dialogue and intriguing mysteries.
Interestingly, a recent survey revealed that nearly 75% of moviegoers enjoy mysteries that engage their critical thinking. These films often spark discussions online, with social media buzzing with fan theories and speculations.
