Tacoma, WA – On April 18, Earth Day, a vibrant group of protesters gathered in Tacoma to push for a powerful climate commission. They marched from Point Defiance to Dune Park, brandishing signs with messages like “strong climate commission” and “system change not climate change.” Their chants, such as “Cut the carbon emissions!” filled the air.
River Bandi, a member of the Osage Nation and part of the Climate Alliance of the South Sound, spoke passionately: “The ‘end of living’ isn’t a distant fear—it’s our reality now. We must treat our planet with care, as if our lives depend on it—because they truly do.”
Dune Park is situated on a site once contaminated by the Asarco copper smelter, which polluted the area for nearly a century. Attendees emphasized critical themes like workers’ rights, climate justice, and the need to respect Indigenous sovereignty. Currently, Tacoma’s climate commission lacks legal authority, allowing corporations to evade accountability while harming local communities.
Phil Harty from CASS highlighted the urgency: “We need real oversight to safeguard our air, land, and water. A strong climate commission can ensure green jobs and uphold treaty rights.”
The rally brought together various community organizations and showcased the power of collective action against corporations exacerbating environmental issues in Tacoma and beyond. Ari Pahoundis from the Freedom Road Socialist Organization pointed out, “This climate catastrophe isn’t just a happenstance; it’s rooted in our economic system. While corporations profit, working people bear the brunt.”
A recent survey showed that 74% of Tacoma residents believe a strong climate commission is essential for sustainable city planning. As community members prepare to launch a citizen initiative for the 2027 ballot, their commitment to future generations remains steadfast. Many see this as a crucial step toward holding powerful interests accountable and ensuring a livable planet.
The advocacy for a robust climate commission continues, fueled by a united community determined to protect their environment and each other.
