The Department of Forests and Renewable Energy (DFER) has kicked off its annual campaign to collect native seeds in Haiti. This initiative focuses on sustainable development and ecosystem conservation.
Agronomist Eder Audate, DFER’s Director, shared that the entire team is committed to making this campaign a success. Over two days, staff and interns worked diligently in the gardens of Collège Saint-Louis de Gonzague in Delmas to gather seeds from the Acajou Pays tree (Swietenia mahagoni).
They collected over seven bags of seeds, each weighing 51 kg. Once processed, these seeds are expected to help reforest about 280 hectares of land, maintaining a planting distance of 4m by 7m between trees.
This effort is part of a larger plan to boost the Acajou Pays population, to enhance forest areas, and to restore critical ecosystems. Next week, the campaign will expand to other regions like the Central Plateau, North, and North-East.
In four months, the collected seeds will sprout into Acajou Pays seedlings. These seedlings will be available in nurseries, ready for future reforestation efforts.
