Climate solutions go beyond data and policies; they start with who we are. Understanding our culture and identity is vital.
In March 2026, over 100 individuals gathered in Memphis for the Climate Change, Health & Equity (CCHE) initiative. The event was titled “Reclaiming the Moment: Using Cultural Power and Policy to Advance Climate and Health Justice.” Attendees included grantees, partners, and Kresge staff.
During the three-day event, participants discovered how artists and community leaders can connect climate issues with people. This is especially crucial for those often left out of policy discussions.
They explored Memphis neighborhoods, learning about food access and land use through urban farms. They also discussed innovative ways to reuse buildings to withstand climate impacts and examined the health issues caused by pollution in affected areas.
Workshops covered a wide range of topics. Some sessions addressed the environmental effects of AI data centers, while others focused on community land trusts. Young people showcased how hip-hop and storytelling can simplify complex flood research for their neighborhoods.
This gathering highlighted that despite challenges to our health systems and climate policies, community power remains our strongest asset.
Recent studies show that communities engaged in climate solutions are more resilient. According to a 2022 report by the American Psychological Association, collective action can lead to improved mental health and community well-being in the face of climate anxiety.
As we look to the future, it’s clear that the voices of the community are key to shaping effective climate strategies. Engaging local artists and leaders can bridge the gap between technical solutions and real-world impacts, ensuring that everyone is part of the conversation.
