On May 13, the Grand Lumière Theatre at the Palais des Festivals will host a special midnight screening of the original Fast & Furious film. Stars like Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and Meadow Walker, daughter of the late Paul Walker, are expected to be in attendance. This event marks the 25th anniversary of the franchise, which debuted on June 22, 2001.
While Universal hasn’t confirmed specific details, rumors suggest some major stars will join the celebration. Vin Diesel has been active on social media about the upcoming eleventh film, currently in development. It would be surprising not to see him at the event, and Michelle Rodriguez has previous ties to Cannes, having attended the AmFar gala last year.
It remains unclear if there will be flashy cars zipping down the Croisette. In the past, Cannes went all out for events, like when they brought in fighter jets for Tom Cruise’s honorary Palme d’Or last year. Thierry Frémaux, the festival chief, often incorporates exciting Hollywood elements into the event. However, this year, he seemingly didn’t secure a major studio launch.
In prior years, the Fast franchise has maintained a presence at Cannes. F9, the ninth chapter, had its premiere there. Also, Universal’s indie label Focus Features has showcased several films at the festival. Two years ago, Donna Langley of Universal received the Kering Women In Motion Award at Cannes.
The Fast & Furious saga began with street racers in Los Angeles involved in heists. Over the years, it transformed the characters into global crime-fighting heroes. The series faced a tragic turn when Paul Walker died in a car accident in 2013. His last film, Furious 7, remains the highest-grossing film in the franchise, earning $1.5 billion worldwide. Overall, the series has grossed around $7.47 billion, making it a key project for Universal.
This year also marks the 20th anniversary of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which will be screened in the Cannes Classics section. The film received a standing ovation at its premiere and won three Oscars. As the festival approaches, it will be interesting to see what surprises await cinema fans on the Riviera.
