MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Central Michigan Football team kicked off its spring practice on Tuesday, marking a fresh start for players and coaches alike at Kramer/Deromedi Field in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
The practice lasted almost two hours and was packed with various drills. The session started with stretching and position-specific exercises. Players engaged in 7-on-7 drills, focusing on offense versus defense, and also practiced special teams. The atmosphere was electric as the Chippewas stepped onto the field early that morning.
"Today was different—there’s a real buzz," senior linebacker Jordan Kwiatkowski shared. "We’ve got a new staff and a new vibe. Everyone feels it and is ready for this change in Central Michigan Football."
Quarterback Joe Labas echoed that excitement. "We’re back, and it feels great. We’ve got new strategies and players coming in. It’s all about syncing up and making progress," he said.
Head coach Matt Drinkall led a roster of 101 players during this initial practice, including 17 newcomers. The team retains 13 starters from last year, ensuring continuity amid the changes. A substantial core of 84 players returns from the previous season, bringing experience that will be crucial for the upcoming games.
Everyone is eager to build a "new identity," according to senior defensive back Caleb Spann. "It’s all about fresh starts and collaboration," he added.
This year’s spring practice consists of 12 sessions, culminating with a Spring Game on April 12. It’s a chance for players to showcase their skills after months without practice.
