UN Climate Change News, 12 August 2025 – In Lusaka, Zambia, over 450 people from around the globe are coming together for the NAP Expo 2025, happening from August 12 to 15. This event is the largest on climate adaptation within the UN framework.
We’re facing serious challenges due to climate change. Zambia has experienced severe droughts that have cut agricultural production by half in recent years. Similar problems like droughts, floods, and heatwaves are affecting food security and jobs worldwide.
Adaptation efforts are at a pivotal moment. We need to speed up our commitment to making meaningful changes that can improve lives and strengthen communities. “At this Expo, we prioritize what truly matters: implementation and saving lives,” stated Youssef Nassef, Director of Adaptation at UN Climate Change. He highlighted the importance of innovation in this work, asking for technology, new financing strategies, and community input to drive progress.
Zambia’s Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, emphasized that collaboration is key for National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) to be effective. He pointed out the need for developed nations to support financial efforts in developing countries. “The Global North should step up and assist with adaptation financing,” he urged, referencing a plan to increase climate finance to these vulnerable regions from $100 billion to $300 billion annually by 2035.
Experts are advocating for better access to financing tools for NAP implementation. Ana Toni, CEO of the upcoming COP30 climate conference in Brazil, stated in a message: “Adaptation must be prioritized globally, especially as climate impacts grow.” She believes that building capacities and securing funding are critical for meaningful change.
Since its start in 2013, the NAP Expo has become a significant platform for advancing these plans, celebrating a decade of learning and progress in climate adaptation. The 2025 expo will focus on innovations in the adaptation process and will launch updated technical guidelines for NAP execution.
Participants can expect discussions on various themes including nature-based solutions, the role of philanthropy in adaptation, and how to align NAPs with Africa’s Agenda 2063. There will be sessions on important topics like mobilizing climate finance and inclusive planning.
The urgency of climate action continues to grow. A recent report from the World Bank states that climate change could push an additional 130 million people into extreme poverty by 2030. This underscores the importance of events like the NAP Expo in driving actions that can combat these impending crises.
