Many RallyCross fans dream of racing toe-to-toe at least once. Some even fantasize about owning their own track. In Blackfoot, Idaho, two friends are making that dream a reality.
What began as a lighthearted dinner conversation has evolved into the United RallyCross Championship (URX), set to kick off this summer. Preston Howell and his brother-in-law Clayton Mortensen are the brains behind this exciting grassroots racing initiative.
You might know them from their adventurous Instagram stunts, where they’ve done everything from dragging a flaming piano through mud to showcasing their fun-loving spirits. But URX is a more serious venture. “We wanted something cleaner, safer, and just more fun,” Howell said. They envisioned a place for affordable cars to race, where everyone can join in the excitement.
Their journey took a concrete turn when Mortensen found a property that once hosted motocross events. It was rough around the edges, but it had great potential. After a few days of persuasion, they secured the space from the owner, who also had dreams of a drag strip.
Turning the concept into reality wasn’t easy; they needed an actual track. Thankfully, both men were familiar with heavy machinery. They rented what they needed and got to work, digging and sculpting a course inspired by European rallycross, American off-road racing, and a touch of Nitrocross. The result? Flowing corners that still allow for speed, perfect for thrilling races.
The buzz on social media has been incredible, helping them recruit nearly 30 drivers for their first event in July. The URX will feature several vehicle classes—2WD, 4WD, and Baja Bugs—with a focus on safety and controlled horsepower.
In a motorsport world often marked by exclusivity and high costs, what Howell and Mortensen are doing stands out. “Our goal is to make racing accessible,” Howell emphasized. “If you’ve got a car and the desire to race, you should be able to show up and do it.”
This commitment reflects a growing trend in motorsports towards grassroots initiatives, where community and passion take center stage. As more fans look for ways to get involved without breaking the bank, URX could be a beacon for a new generation of racers.
For those interested in motorsports, the URX represents a refreshing shift. It highlights a more inclusive approach to racing, inviting everyone to participate in the thrill of competition. If you’re curious about this evolving scene, check out their official site for updates and events.
