Last Thursday, January 29, over 300 music fans gathered at Soul Kitchen for the 5th annual Doc Rock, a lively battle of the bands that supports USA Health. Five local bands, each linked to the health system, took the stage. Their goal? To raise funds for important health programs and research.
Shanna Thorpe, the director of constituent engagement at the University of South Alabama, praised the event, saying, “Doc Rock was an outstanding night made possible by our sponsors, supporters, and an amazing crowd.” Each band brought its unique style, turning the night into an unforgettable experience.
Fundraising happened through donations for votes, with awards given based on audience favorites and judges’ decisions. Society Hill won the Rock the Mission Award, raising $5,000 for Project Inspire, a program focused on injury prevention at USA Health University Hospital. Sixth Sense, a group of medical students, earned the Fanatic Award for raising $4,000 for the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute. They also snagged the Crowd-er Favorite Award, boosting their total by another $2,000. Sloth Racer took home the Technical Award, contributing $3,000 for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at USA Health Children’s & Women’s Hospital.
The event was hosted by Dr. Lynn Batten, director of Pediatric Cardiology at USA Health. Judges included local radio personalities and medical professionals, ensuring a mix of expertise and entertainment.
A variety of sponsors stepped up to support the event, such as CrowderGulf and the USA Foundation. Local media outlets also played a key role in promoting Doc Rock, helping raise awareness and excitement.
