Owner Michelle Tuplin said it wasn’t just about the logistics. “It was a practical way to move the books, but it also let everyone be part of it,” she shared. As folks handed over titles, they shared memories and recommendations, creating a buzz of excitement.

The idea took root back in January when Tuplin announced the move. The response was overwhelming. “Everyone wanted to help,” she said. It took less than two hours to transfer all the books, which was a fraction of the time it would have taken a moving company. The community’s effort even ensured the books were sorted in alphabetical order as they were put back on the shelves.

The new shop will open soon, and it’s a fresh chapter for a bookstore that’s been part of Chelsea for decades. Tuplin has owned it since 2017, and it’s become a crucial part of the town’s identity.

Chelsea has a population of about 5,300 people, and its residents pride themselves on looking out for one another. “It’s a small town, and you often bump into someone you know,” said Kaci Friss, a long-time local and part-time employee at the bookstore. She called the book brigade a beautiful reminder of the close-knit nature of the community.
