Join the ‘Buy Out the Market’ Challenge: Nourishing Families and Empowering Local Farmers in Madison

The Northside Farmers’ Market is wrapping up its season with a special event called “Buy Out the Market.” This Sunday, shoppers can support local farmers by purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables to donate directly to a local pantry.

Helen Osborn-Senatus, director of operations at The River Food Pantry, expressed excitement about the event. “Thanks to the Northside Farmers’ Market and Healthy Food for All of Dane County, we can gather food for our pantry,” she said. The donations will be prepared on Monday and distributed to families starting Tuesday.

The need for fresh produce is on the rise. The River has seen a 14% increase in demand over the past year. Osborn-Senatus noted that many families have expressed a desire for more fresh fruits and vegetables. “I spoke to families in line, and they all wanted more produce,” she shared.

Sabrina Hilton, Co-Manager of the market, highlighted the community spirit that makes the Northside Farmers’ Market special. She hopes for a big turnout, noting that farmers will bring extra produce to sell and donate. “Produce is perishable, and we aim to have enough to donate to those in need,” she said.

Shoppers are encouraged to think of their neighbors while selecting items. “If you buy apples for yourself, consider buying a bag to donate,” Osborn-Senatus suggested. This small act makes a big difference for those who rely on the pantry.

The market runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Northside Town Center this Sunday.

As communities grapple with increased food insecurity, events like these become vital. According to recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, around 10.5% of households experienced food insecurity in 2021. Local initiatives, like the Northside Farmers’ Market, play a crucial role in addressing these challenges by connecting surplus produce with those in need.

By participating in community events, we not only support local farmers but also strengthen our community ties and help our neighbors in a meaningful way.
