TAHLEQUAH – A new film called “The Savior,” produced by Geolink Nations, is looking for Cherokee speakers to help bring it to life. They need both fluent speakers and those learning the language to dub the movie into Cherokee.
This film tells the story of Jesus, based on the Gospel of Luke, and has been released in over 40 languages worldwide. Now, it’s getting a special edition for Indigenous languages in North America.
Chris Forbes, the director of Geolink Nations, emphasizes the importance of storytelling in connecting with diverse cultures. He believes that presenting this story in Cherokee will resonate deeply with the community.
About 40 Cherokee speakers are needed to voice more than 70 characters. Interestingly, you don’t need acting experience, as a language coach will help with pronunciation.
John Ross, the Cherokee language coach, shared that they’ve received an enthusiastic response to their casting call. Over 100 people have shown interest, excited to be part of this project.
Everyone is welcome to audition! Alongside dubbing, there will be opportunities to film new scenes featuring Cherokee citizens. This will ensure the film feels authentic and relevant to local audiences.
A Cherokee director will guide the entire process. The team will also seek out Native crew members for roles in sound, lighting, and other production tasks. This collaborative effort aims to create a film that is truly representative of the Cherokee culture.
Filming and recording will take place in or around Tahlequah and eastern Oklahoma. Participants will be compensated for their contributions.
Dubbed in Cherokee, this will be the second North American Indigenous language for the film, following a version in Mvskoke (Muscogee Creek and Seminole).
