Seattle Humane shared that the requests for help at their pet food bank have surged. With volunteers working hard, the shelves at Seattle Humane are alarmingly empty. They encourage the community to assist by either dropping off food directly or checking their Amazon Wish List.
A similar situation is unfolding in Pierce County. The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County reports a drastic increase in demand for their Pet Food & Supply Pantry. Last year, they distributed over 110,000 pounds of food. Now, they regularly use more than 160 bags of dry dog food and over 100 bags of dry cat food each month.
“No one should have to choose between feeding their pet and themselves,” a spokesperson from the Tacoma shelter emphasized. Sadly, many families may feel compelled to surrender their beloved pets as a result of their financial struggles.
In fact, a survey conducted by the Pet Food Institute found that about 25% of pet owners have experienced issues affording pet food within the past year. This data highlights a growing concern among pet owners and the shelters that support them.
