Support Salukis in Need This Holiday Season

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Everyone can use a helping hand at times. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Thanks “GivingBack” food drive is a chance to support Salukis who may be struggling this holiday season.

On November 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., everyone—faculty, staff, and community members—can donate nonperishable food items to the Saluki Food Pantry. This pantry has assisted thousands of students since it opened in 2016. Donations can be dropped off at the Student Center’s first-floor hall, near the University Bookstore. If you can’t drop off items, contact foodpantry@siu.edu for other options.

“Last year, we helped 280 students, and this semester we’ve already helped 239,” said Emily Spann, associate director of the Student Center. “The need is definitely there.”

Recent studies reveal that 36% of SIU students face food insecurity. This can negatively impact their health and academic success. The Saluki Food Pantry, along with the HEROES program, aims to meet these vital needs. Students typically receive enough food for three days without any charge.

Items in High Demand

While all donations are welcome, here are some essentials that college students often prefer:

  • Canned tuna, chicken, and other proteins.
  • Peanut butter and dried beans.
  • Rice, oatmeal, cereal, and pasta.
  • Spaghetti, tomato products, Ramen noodles, and soups.
  • Canned fruit and vegetables.
  • Packaged potatoes and mac and cheese.
  • Basic staples like sugar, flour, and seasonings.

Monetary donations to buy food are also appreciated; you can contribute online. The pantry even has an Amazon wish list for specific items.

The Saluki Food Pantry is located on the lower level of the Student Center and operates three hours each weekday, making it accessible for busy students.
